How do we use etymology to read the history of a word?
Etymology is finding out where a word was born, how it’s lived and grown. It’s also very useful for helping us get to know what words really mean, how they relate to other words, and how they’re spelled. As you get to know the eymology of some words (like words ending in the suffix ‘-ology’, meaning ‘the study of’ from the Greek ‘logos’ or ‘word’) you’ll be able to guess the meaning of other words you’ve never met before, because you see the family resemblance.
1. Watch the 2 videos about where words come from.
2. Worksheet instructions.
Search the dictionary for words that come from the root word, shown in the centre of the page.
Fill in the word web by listing four words that relate to the given root word and write them in the spaces provided. On the outer layer of the word web, in the lined boxes provided, write the definition for each word you have identified.
